Can You Recall?

Today, I just got 72 years under my belt. I don't feel a day different! As I mused and reflected back on years past, wondering if I had made any sort of contribution to society, family and friends, I came upon a profound question. What's the first thing that I could ever remember in my lifetime? I tried the question out on my Beautiful Bride Betty [BBB] - she said, "I think it was when I was about three years old and got out of the house when my mother wasn't looking and started marching down the sidewalk toward town - stark naked." I, on the other hand, was much more conservative. I remember when I got on my tricycle one day at age three and pedalled it about a quarter-mile away to a store, on a street corner in town [my parents lived in Somerville, MA at the time]. This was maybe summertime in 1938. I do remember when I got found by my mother, I immediately informed her that I wasn't lost! Two other significant events around the same time that I can vaguely remember, include fooling around with my mother's sewing machine and running the sewing machine needle almost through my thumb. WOW, THAT HURT! Maybe that's why I remember it. The other event was the hurricane of September 21st of 1938. I can remember all kinds of stuff flying by the window.

You know, it's a funny thing - I can remember back to age three - but I sometimes when I get up from the computer to get something important in the kitchen - by the time I get there, I've forgotten what I went for.

What about you?

Once you get up to do something and get into another room, the memory of the mission at hand kind of drifts to "the bottom"... but when you return to your seat, the pressing on your buttocks sends the thought back up to your brain so you remember suddenly what it was you meant to do.

I think Bill Cosby's solution was, once you get into the other room and forget why you went there, just use your hand to push on your backside. The memory will come flooding back immediately, faking the whole system out.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Loved those memories--hahaha! Mother!!!

I love your kid, Karen! I'm sure all the other ones are great, too, but I've only met Karen and she's a keeper. Way to go on the blog. Maybe I'll encourage my parents to blog some memories so the grandkids can always cherish the stories...
As far as my memory, I remember when I was three, living in Moraga, CA, across the Golden Gate Bridge. We would go into China Town and eat Dim Sum with my cousins.

I love this! I remember so much about being three and yet I too, have a hard time remembering yesterday. Ah, people tell me all the time I remember the weird stuff in life. I think it's just a gift, hehe. Now, what's my name again?

Thanks for sharing your story :)

that was a great post...the funny thing is, the type of memory loss you described at the end knows no age boundaries. or if it does for most, then i, at 30, am in for a long life of being utterly confused:0) i blame my absent-mindedness of my four little children...you blame yours on age. it all balances out!

happy birthday!

The furthest back that I can remember was I must have been 3 and going to work with my mom. She was a waitress at a local resturaunt and my dad got off at 3:00 and she had to be to work about that time. I remember taking my Barbies along and all the other waitresses playing with me on their breaks. Happy Birthday by the way and I laughed about the memory loss part. I do the same thing so don't feel bad!

Thanks for your comments, you guys. I forgot to mention that one of my other friends said he clearly remembers someone holding him upside down by his feet and spanking him on his bottom. He said that if he could find that guy he'd have him arrested for child abuse. Can you believe that?
