Did You Know That......

- An external combustion Steam Engine has been developed and will soon go into production. It's called the Cyclone Engine and can be scaled up in size and horsepower from a string trimmer to a locomotive. The engine burns most any fuel and produces exceptionally clean exhaust. The first production engine will quietly power a 10kw generator.

- An exciting new process has been developed to produce high quality oil from algae. It will be price-competitive with drilled oil and can be produced most anywhere in the world. Algae is actually new oil and for this process is a feed stock which reproduces itself. The process can be scaled up or down to fit any production need. I see the possibility of utilizing this process to power Cyclone Engine applications.

- New Dell laptop computers will soon be sold with a 19hr battery and HP will be selling computers with a touch screen that replaces the keyboard.

- If you get your tv via a satellite provider [Dish or Directv], you may be able to reduce your monthly bill by 20%+ and still maintain your current subscription plan. All you have to do is ask - I did.

I love your "I didn't know that" series!

Someone asked me if I knew what ship you were assigned to when you were in the Navy.

I seriously doubt the validity of the info you are supplying on algae oil, but without a reference (you really need to reference your sources if you want you info to be useful to your readers). I can only say that to date in my research - the best any commercial algae oil production process has done in producing salable algae oil is a production cost of about $18/gal. This is twice as high as vegetable oil and nine times higher than competitive petroleum fuels. Please supply a reference for your information - all your information a lot of it is highly questionable.

Hey dug - Thanks for your comment and suggestion. The algae oil company is Origin Oil. It's a new company with a sophisticated process [patents pending]. I'd say that if we don't get weened off foreign oil soon - it's a pretty sure bet that in the future, the Origin Oil process and the one you support will be price competitive.

Hey Ms. Kool- I was on the USS Chilton, APA-38 [Attack Transport] from 1958-1960 and on the USS Waldron. DD-699 [Destroyer] from 1960-1962. Both ships were out of the East Coast and in the Mediterranean - 6th Fleet.

It's not about supporting a company, it's about basic economic feasibility. We can agree in that we all want energy independence, but the current naive euphoria over algae oil, is scientifically unjustified by the lack of feasibility that has been shown thus far. I have been commercially producing algae for the past 40 years - not for fuel and I am familiar with most technical production processes including Origin Oil and most of the other algae oil developers. Based on Origin's web site they haven't produced significant quantities of algae oil and in my opinion their technology is very questionable from both an energy budget (it cost more energy for their process than the process will produce) and economic feasibility standpoint - competing with petroleum products. I challenge you find any algae oil developer that is competitive with even the highest petroleum costs we have seen this year. I challenge you to find one company that posts their production costs. There are real physical and economic reasons why these numbers aren't being posted. One thing is clear to those of us who have worked in this field - both algae oil developers and their investors could benefit from having less PR people and few more economist.

I suggest you check out this unbiased article about algae oil in general and perhaps you will understand where I am coming from regarding energy budgets and economic feasiblity:
